✅Implant success in your dental practice.

The Alabama Implant Education Live Dental Implant Training course centers around live patient care and mentored surgical experiences. For the student, this Live Dental Implant course means real patients, real surgery, and real education. This curriculum rewards hard work and supports students with high levels of personal attention. Small classes ensure plenty of interaction with faculty. Our graduates of the Live Dental Implant Training course place implants successfully in their practices.

The Alabama Implant Education course is divided into two segments: the Didactic Portion and the Clinical Portion.

The Didactic Portion is usually offered in large metropolitan areas that are easy to access including Atlanta, Chicago, and Houston.

The Clinical Portion includes a mentored clinical session and is held in Birmingham, Alabama. Dentists must be licensed in the United States and have professional insurance coverage to participate in clinical exercises.

Course Structure

Session 1
Session 1 classes are held Thursday through Saturday. There are some hands-on exercises, such as implant placement and suturing, but most of your time is spent in lecture, planning and discussing cases, and establishing foundations of implant care. Lectures focus on the surgical aspect of implant dentistry.
Session 2
Session 2 spans Thursday through Saturday and offers an immersive, hands-on experience for participants. Thursday is dedicated entirely to surgery, with a typical schedule of 12 surgeries—six in the morning and six in the afternoon. Participants are encouraged to assist each other chair-side, gaining valuable insights by observing and contributing to their peers’ procedures. Friday focuses on reviewing and discussing the previous day’s surgeries in a residency seminar-style format. This collaborative session allows clinicians to reflect on their experiences, celebrating successes and identifying key learning points. Additional lectures are conducted on restorative aspects of implant dentistry, enriching participants’ understanding of the complete process. Saturday is another surgical day, where participants perform one to two surgeries and assist with another one or two. These cases focus on placing implants in areas with abundant bone, such as placing two implants in the edentulous mandible for an overdenture or placing an implant in site #19 for a single crown. Some procedures include immediate implant placement following extractions, providing practical experience with diverse scenarios.

Course Didactic Topics

  • Rationale for Implants
  • Basics of implants: terminology, biomechanics, loading
  • Medical evaluation of patients
  • Minor grafting
  • Treatment planning

  • Mechanics of placing implants
  • Parts and pieces; instrumentation

AIE provides students with excellent didactic and hands-on training. I recently took this course and had an amazing experience.

First, I went to New Orleans for the didactic portion of the course. Here, Dr. Ouellette lectures on several topics, from single implant restorations, to AOX, and soft tissue grafting. Dr. Ouellette provides general guidelines, such as implant sizing, prosthetic requirements, case acceptance, and other treatment recommendations. The lecture would usually end with a hands on activity (suturing, models, etc.)

The reason I highly recommend this course is because of the live patient portion, which takes place in Alabama. In Alabama, there is no shortage of people who need teeth.

Participants will participate in cases ranging from the standard staged implant placement, to placing multiple implants for a fixed prosthesis. Some participants may be treating a patient under moderate sedation. I personally placed 10 implants, several of my cases were full mouth extractions, followed by implants for fixed and removable prosthesis. You will be paired with a partner, mine was great and we worked well together.

The training takes place at The Foundry. Many of the patients here have a history of substance abuse, and it shows. It feels good to provide patients who would otherwise never be able to afford this type of care.

In Alabama, the course is coordinated by Dr. McCracken. He provides students with a full scope of clinical pearls. He is joined by other faculty members, as well as residents at The Foundry. The course was well organized. For instance, sometimes a patient would no show, or have high BP. The clinic administrators would always have several backup patients waiting just in case. Students were always busy with something. Faculty are approachable, and eager to answer any questions.

Overall, I give the course 5/5. During the didactic portion, there were times where reps from BioHorizons and W&H would give their spiel about their products (greatest thing since sliced bread, etc.) To be fair, we used their instruments, and they are very well made. AIE also has a marketing division that gives you a pitch as well.

Random thoughts regarding the course ……

It was very common extract a tooth then place an immediate. If you are not confident in surgical procedures, or have limited experience, you should first be comfortable with basic flap design, and surgical extractions. If not, I saw many students struggling taking teeth out, and would be fatigued during placement.

There was a noticeable regional bias with the participants. Lots of people from Louisiana, Florida, Texas (i.e. Southern Bias). I was one of a handful that came from above the Mason-Dixon.

My fiance gladly joined me during the didactic portion in New Orleans. She declined to join me in Bessemer, Alabama. She made a smart decision.

I wouldn’t recommend this course if you are looking for an intro live patient course. However, I would recommend it if you have some implant experience and are looking to gain some experience on overdentures or all on 4’s-most of your cases will be patients who are edentulous or close to full edentulous.

The didactic portion is weak; I expected a lot more considering that Mccracken is a professor at UAB. He is very knowledgeable, and he does simplify implant placements in general, but if you want a good foundation I would recommend taking a good online didactic implant course and doing an overseas live patient course for the repetitions.

    Cons:
Weak didactic- You get a whole book during the didactic portion of the course, however, McCracken doesn’t go through all of it due to the lack of time and the amount of material that needs to be covered. It could be more efficient if they gave you access to the material ahead of the course.

Lack of faculty- basically 3 faculty for 20+ people. You also get help from the residents, however, since they are students and young they aren’t inclined to help you.

The number of implants- it’s similar to dental school; life is a box of chocolates you never know what you are going to get. The number of implants you can place is dependent on your speed (you’ll have to extract a lot of teeth, do a full arch flap, alveoloplasty and suture), your partner, and your patient’s case. I would expect 6-10 implants and 2.5 days of clinic (one morning and one afternoon and the last day being just one session). Given how few implants you might place I truly believe this course should only be 8-9k.

Patients- it’s a community clinic. Some patients come from afar to get affordable care while others may have complex medical histories which can stall treatment. For instance, if their BP isn’t controlled due to a previous history of drug abuse and other medical conditions the pt may be rescheduled for another day-> you lost that session of treatment that you won’t get back.

Salesy- they will try to sell you their SEO services from day one.

    Pros:

McCracken is a very good lecturer. He keeps it interesting and entertaining.

Ample amount of snacks, and lunches are decent, but dinner is not covered :(.

You learn the most outside of lecture by probing the brain of the faculty members as well as the residents.

Residents are helpful- you can ask them to take over if you don’t want to do the extractions and save your energy for flapping and implant placement. This also includes if you don’t want to suture you can ask them to do it as well.

The AIE staff members do listen. If you want to do more immediate or simpler cases if they can sift through whatever patients they have that day to accommodate you.

It’s in the USA, makes it easier to travel.
