Dr. John Kois
Optional replacement for course 103 and 153
  • 103: Treatment Planning Course: Diagnostically Driven
  • 153: Functional Occlusion: Science Driven Management

Treatment Planning is a unique program designed to empower and enlighten every participant and inspire confidence in diagnosis and treatment planning with predictable outcomes.  Starting with “why,” Dr. Kois builds a philosophy and systems that incorporate what you may already know, then develops, through research, evidence, and proven clinical techniques, the Diagnostically Driven Treatment Planning concept. Be prepared to confidently implement the skills and concepts for predictable management of patients immediately following the course.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn how to incorporate a comprehensive examination and systematic treatment planning into your patient care.
  • Learn why Dr. Kois’ treatment planning system and simplified diagnostic opinion can build your knowledge base dramatically and increase confidence in your ability to plan treatment and create more predictable outcomes.
  • Learn how to recognize, assess and account for risk using a protocol that evaluates periodontal, biomechanical, functional and dentofacial issues.
  • Learn how to transfer the four diagnostic parameters into treatment plans and sequences that will minimize risk and maximize long-term success.
  • Learn how to engage the patient in understanding their condition so they may participate more fully in their own care.
  • Gain a clear understanding of Maximum Intercuspal Position, Centric Relation and Centric Occlusion.
  • Learn to ask key questions related to Occlusion in the Dental History form and how to interpret the answers.
  • Learn a classification and risk assessment system of normal and abnormal attrition of teeth, including: Acceptable Function, Frictional Chewing Pattern, Constricted Chewing Pattern, Occlusal Dysfunction, Parafunction, and Neurological Disorder.
  • Learn how and when to use the Kois Deprogrammer and other centric relation recording devices. You will work with your fellow participants to fabricate, deliver and experience your own Kois Deprogrammer.
  • Learn how to mount models on the Panadent articulator using the Kois Dento-Facial Analyzer and to incorporate improved refinements on traditional methods.
  • Understand a new, simplified terminology for occlusal management: The “Three P’s”- Position, Place and Pathway.
  • Understand that, as a result of insight into the way humans chew, the concept of Anterior Guidance is no longer valid.
  • Be prepared to confidently implement the skills and concepts for predictable management of patients immediately following the course.

The best course I have ever taken! It was enlightening and made me a much better dentist! It gives you the fundamentals of quality dentistry and teaches you how to stay away from trouble! I am way more confident in treating complex cases that I thought I would ever be. Dr Kois is definitely the man! Best speaker ever. He is very approachable, down to earth, caring and the most passionate dentist i have ever met. Even though the days are long and I was pregnant during this class I never felt tired or bored! He is the kind of instructor that is not only knowledgeable but also able to give and transmit his knowledge. It is quite impressive how everything is organized to perfection. This course gave the kind of information that I was able to apply in my daily practice.
Definitely you can’t go wrong with a Kois Class

I had been meaning to take a course at the Kois Center for a long time. It wasn’t until a friend of mine convinced me (well he basically said “Do it. It’ll change your life.”) that I decided it was time to step foot into another world of dentistry.

I decided to jump right in to Course 165, the combo Treatment Planning & Functional Occlusion course. It’s a costly investment upfront and you’ll be away from your practice and family for 5 days. It’s a little cheaper doing it this way (factoring in tuition and airfare + hotel costs) rather than the courses separately. Besides Seattle is a lovely city and you really get to form friendships with your other classmates with the longer course.

I won’t lie. It is a lot of information in the course. John Kois basically gives you the foundation pieces of his curriculum. It’s like drinking through a firehose. But the information given will blow your mind. There will be a lot of “WOW” moments during the course. You will be impressed by the evidence-based dentistry that is presented. There is always a why and a why not to the things that John does. Even though there is a lot of info, you get it all in either a digital format or paper binder for you to digest and look through after the course.

I’m glad I took this course because I got to meet and listen to the man himself, John Kois. He is very approachable and will answer any and all of your questions to make sure you understand his concepts. I can see why so many respected colleagues can’t say enough praise for him and the information they have attained at the Kois Center. Take this course and I’m sure you’ll be motivated to sign up for the next one.

I signed up for this course before graduating dental school by just the reputation alone. It did not disappoint. To start, everything at the Kois Center was Planned and thought out. The course manual was electronic with the ability to take notes and make bookmarks. There are hyperlinks in the books to cited studies and appendices. Each student has a chair outfitted with plugs and a heater.

I have been to other courses where the material is presented in PowerPoint and there seem to be many “technology errors”. None of that occurred in the week long course. Although each day is long, every student was engaged from Monday to Friday.

The course content made sense and was proven through extensive research. Dr. Kois presented everything in a way that made sense and so it could be implemented on Monday morning.

I can not recommend this course enough and have already signed up for the remainder of the continuum.
