Alabama Implant Education
Dr. Michael McCracken, DDS, PHD

✅Implant success in your dental practice.

Alabama Implant Education Live Dental Implant Training course centers around live patient care and mentored surgical experiences. For the student, this means real patients, real surgery, and real education. This curriculum rewards hard work and supports students with high levels of personal attention. Small classes ensure plenty of interaction with faculty. Our graduates place implants successfully in their practices.

AIE Implant Course: HANDS-ON IMPLANT TRAINING The course offers live-patient care and mentored surgical experience. Students meet real patients, see real surgery, and get practical education. Small class size means every student gets more personal attention and interaction with faculty. It’s a rewarding curriculum that enables graduating students to deliver different implant procedures in their practices successfully.

Course Structure

The Alabama Implant Education course is divided into two segments: the Didactic Portion and the Clinical Portion.

The Didactic Portion is usually offered in large metropolitan areas that are easy to access including Atlanta, Chicago, and Houston.

The Clinical Portion includes a mentored clinical session and is held in Birmingham, Alabama. Dentists must be licensed in the United States and have professional insurance coverage to participate in clinical exercises.

CLINICAL PORTION
OPTION 1 – 2 – SESSION DATES TO CHOOSE FROM

  • We do 20-24 surgeries per day, with 10 to 12 in the morning and 10 to 12 in the afternoon (except on Saturdays). Doctor’s assist each other chair-side where they learn by watching and offering assistance in this hands-on dental implant training. Daily, we review and discuss the surgeries from the previous day and prepare for surgeries in the following morning session. Clinicians are always enthusiastic and excited to see themselves and their peers successfully place implants. These surgeries offer valuable points for discussion and review, all performed in a residency seminar-type format

OPTION 2

  • If you elect not to come to our clinic, you can have us come to YOU! We will do an “IN YOUR OFFICE” hands-on implant training. It offers 1-on-1 Surgical Experience, instead of at the Foundry Dental Center for your course requirement.

DIDACTIC PORTION

AIE provides students with excellent didactic and hands-on training. I recently took this course and had an amazing experience.

First, I went to New Orleans for the didactic portion of the course. Here, Dr. Ouellette lectures on several topics, from single implant restorations, to AOX, and soft tissue grafting. Dr. Ouellette provides general guidelines, such as implant sizing, prosthetic requirements, case acceptance, and other treatment recommendations. The lecture would usually end with a hands on activity (suturing, models, etc.)

The reason I highly recommend this course is because of the live patient portion, which takes place in Alabama. In Alabama, there is no shortage of people who need teeth.

Participants will participate in cases ranging from the standard staged implant placement, to placing multiple implants for a fixed prosthesis. Some participants may be treating a patient under moderate sedation. I personally placed 10 implants, several of my cases were full mouth extractions, followed by implants for fixed and removable prosthesis. You will be paired with a partner, mine was great and we worked well together.

The training takes place at The Foundry. Many of the patients here have a history of substance abuse, and it shows. It feels good to provide patients who would otherwise never be able to afford this type of care.

In Alabama, the course is coordinated by Dr. McCracken. He provides students with a full scope of clinical pearls. He is joined by other faculty members, as well as residents at The Foundry. The course was well organized. For instance, sometimes a patient would no show, or have high BP. The clinic administrators would always have several backup patients waiting just in case. Students were always busy with something. Faculty are approachable, and eager to answer any questions.

Overall, I give the course 5/5. During the didactic portion, there were times where reps from BioHorizons and W&H would give their spiel about their products (greatest thing since sliced bread, etc.) To be fair, we used their instruments, and they are very well made. AIE also has a marketing division that gives you a pitch as well.

Random thoughts regarding the course ……

It was very common extract a tooth then place an immediate. If you are not confident in surgical procedures, or have limited experience, you should first be comfortable with basic flap design, and surgical extractions. If not, I saw many students struggling taking teeth out, and would be fatigued during placement.

There was a noticeable regional bias with the participants. Lots of people from Louisiana, Florida, Texas (i.e. Southern Bias). I was one of a handful that came from above the Mason-Dixon.

My fiance gladly joined me during the didactic portion in New Orleans. She declined to join me in Bessemer, Alabama. She made a smart decision.
