Dr. Miguel A Ortiz

How would I have wanted to be taught photography? That is the question that I asked myself when putting together this course. Do I want to learn only the trends of the moment or do I want to know how to use photography in every situation I encounter? The answer was simple. I want to learn PHOTOGRAPHY. Everyday photography, portrait photography, kids photography, landscape, still, macro and of course, dental photography. When you come to my course you will find a small group learning environment.

It starts with an introduction to the fundamentals of photography. Aperture, Shutter Speed, Depth of Field, Iso. We will learn their meaning, importance and how to utilize them in your camera and in our photography. We continue with the concepts of White Balance, Exposure Mode, Camera Metering and Exposure Compensation. It is at this point that we usually break into group sessions and hands-on practice. This is the only dental photography course in existence where you will have your own small group of 3-5 students with a dedicated shooting station. A model and make up artist are provided for each small group in most of my courses. I believe in you having plenty of time to practice everything that is learned in this course until you are satisfied. I make sure every person in the group has the time and support needed to understand and implement every concept. We will only move forward once you are comfortable. Nobody is left behind.

Once these concepts have personally been reviewed between you and me, we continue to build on our foundation. We touch on file types, use of histogram, macro photography, light sources and accessories.

With the camera in our hands and all the bases covered it is now time to turn our attention to dentistry. We will immerse ourselves into the full intra and extra oral photographic protocol. Then we will move onto portrait photography, artistic photography and laboratory photography. You and I will have the chance to utilize flashes, light boxes and all the fancy toys that I will have at your disposal. Once you are exhausted of taking photos, and I truly mean it, I won’t leave until you capture every shot you ever wanted. This will conclude a full day of everything I would have liked to learn in one day if I could go back in time

Dr. Ortiz’s one day hands on course covered all the basics for me on how to get started with dental photography. I direct messaged him asking about recommendations of what kind of camera to buy and to get set up. He was more than willing to help. Not only did he share those top recommendations but included links to buy at reasonable prices.
He talks about fundamentals of photography and even includes a lesson on taking shade. Highly recommend this course for anyone starting their dental photography journey.

I took many dental photography courses by now, USC, UCLA, and some more.
Every lecture focused on explaining the camera but lacked the hand on experience.
    Not this one.
I was very please the lecture part of it first. It was put in a very simple language that is simple to understand and remember. Then it was the had on portion, smaller group of student with lots of hand on. Dr Ortiz dedicated his time to go over every shot and setting.
The course was very well organized and very well run. it had very positive energy and fun. it did not feel like ” just a lecture”
I am fascinated by Dr Ortiz, his journey and his passion in dentistry. I am planing to attend his Adhesive rehab and preparation course.

My only regret was not taking the course sooner…

I found out about Dr. Miguel Ortiz’s courses through co-residents and they invited me to take it with them but at the time I thought it was too expensive and didn’t give it a shot…

Fast forward a year into private practice, I was in a slump, kind of jaded of the same old routine with patients… Then I rediscovered the course through instagram and took it in Miami.

The course reinvigorated my love for Dentistry. Miguel became a role model, a mentor an inspiration really. My practice has never been the same. My patients now can see great photos of before and after cases, detailed pictures of the treatment I propose to them and treatment acceptance increased dramatically.

I only wish I had taken it before graduating. I go to work early in the morning looking forward to the cases I have and documenting them in the spectacular fashion that Dr. Ortiz teaches us in his photography course.

Thank you Dr. Ortiz, you changed my life as a Prosthodontist, made my practice more fun and profitable. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Excellent one day course on digital photography. This course really helps you understand how to use light. The fundamentals of photography and understanding white balance, aperture, ISO and shutter speed gives myself an opportunity to correct problems that I might have when taking photos. The great thing about the course is that applies to more than just dental photography. The everyday use of the camera with family photos and landscape gave me the opportunity to use my DSLr and an excuse not to use my iPhone.

I’ve taken Miguel’s photography course twice–once as part of a large group, and once as a more private setting in our office.. It’s unreal how differently I look at my camera, and as a result, my own work.

Miguel’s philosophy is that he is not going to give you specific settings to get the “perfect” photograph. Rather, for the first half of the course, he will teach you how your camera works and to understand what effect each adjustment will have on your photograph. It’s a really great breakdown for somebody who bought their SLR and hasn’t changed it from F22 1/160 since taking it out of the box, while still being a good refresher for somebody who knows their way around their camera.

The second half is all hands-on. Miguel has plenty of workstations set up and everybody gets a lot of time to play around. He gave us specific directives at first–take a portrait with a completely white background, take a portrait with a completely black background. Sounds easy enough, but it’s not; and learning the ins and outs of what to adjust is far more enriching than just sitting at a desk and having somebody tell you some settings. You learn how to anticipate what effect each change will have, so when your photo doesn’t capture exactly the effect you want, you know where to start adjusting to correct it. Once you get to the artsy photos, you’ll have an idea of where to put those flashes to highlight just what you want to show.

Aside from the camera and lens (which you should really already have), the lighting equipment he recommends is very affordable and easy to set up and use.

Most importantly, when you learn how to take photos that capture the natural beauty of your restorations, you’ll notice that they will also capture the flaws. I don’t let a patient leave the room for an anterior case until I’ve taken a photo and viewed it on a screen–my eyes will lie to me all day long, but my photos won’t. I’ll see surface imperfections, uneven line angles that reflect light unnaturally, rough margins. Being able to see these blown up (as opposed to washing them all out with a ring flash), has actually made me a better dentist.

Learning how to maximize the use of your camera will improve your esthetic eye, your marketing, and your own self-satisfaction. I can’t recommend this course enough.

The Dental photography course that Dr Miguel Ortiz teaches is truly one of a kind and if you haven’t attended one yet, you are missing one of the finest skills you need to be a good dentist in this day and age. If you are a beginner or have background already in dental photography there will still be a lot to learn from his course. I took his course without any prior knowledge about dental photography and my eyes were opened to a complete new dimension. Not only it is very pleasing and aesthetic taking professional photographs but your patients understand you better and lab communication is so much easier. From the introduction to camera and photography to the hands on portion everything is so well organized and informative. Definitely recommend this course not just for the dentist but the staff of your office that will be helping you. It makes a huge difference and it is the best investment you can make for a dental photography course.

I highly recommend Miguel Ortiz’s dental photography course. I am trained in advance general dentistry. I completed my advanced education in general dentistry residency at UCLA. While I was there we practiced photography and I made a habit of taking lots of photos. However I could never achieve the photo quality that I truly desired. After taking Miguel Ortiz’s course I now see that I was lacking resources and some key principles in order to get those photos. I was lacking the knowledge that he provides in a manner that is very easy to execute, replicate, and understand. Not only is Dr. Ortiz very knowledgeable he has an infectious positive personality and makes the course fun. He makes it so easy to return to the office on fire and excited. I wish that I had been provided this information while I was in the residency program or dental school. Whether you’re a doctor, a resident, or a student this course can be highly beneficial for you.

Course was great I took the course in April of 2019. I don’t have much background in photography so I enjoyed that we were first taught the background instead of simple “how to take a picture”. The course teaches you the fundamentals. You will need to then practice on ur own but since u are taught the fundamentals it is easier to understand what is wrong with your pictures and how you can improve. The release of Miguel’s new book helps as well I would definitely recommend this course. Would be great if we can get CE too though

Dr. Ortiz’s course is incredible. He spends time teaching the basic principles of photography, how the camera works, how to use it, and then you spend the afternoon practicing on your newly made friends/colleagues. What’s more important is that this course does two immediate things – first it teaches you some basic concepts that you can actually start using as soon as you get back to the office on Monday. The second thing he does is to show you how to improve on your own so that you can self evaluate, and grow your photography skills. Learning how to take good photos has been eye-opening, allowing me to self evaluate and improve not only my photography skills, but my clinical work as well. For my fellow GPs out there, this course is also now PACE approved for CE credit.

Lastly, pictures are work a 1000 words, and they have also helped with case acceptance, documentation, and making the day-to-day clinical work more fun!

I was blessed to attend Dr. Miguel Ortiz’s Dental Photography CE course. I gave been following him on Instagram for a long time and always wanted to know how he took such amazing photos of his dental procedures and work. This course changed my whole perspective on dental photography in my early career.

Do you remember learning much about dental photography during dental school? I remember the basics, but none of my photos turned out very good and I could never figure out the manual settings nor how to get my photos to look nice. This CE course is a hands-on course with models that allow you to take photos of their teeth and practice. You do need to buy and/or bring a DSLR camera. However, Dr. Ortiz is very good at teaching you the fundamentals of dental photography and how to be successful. It isn’t very difficult to do either. He makes it very simple and shows you exactly what type of camera, lens, and flash setup to use. This is an all-day course and gives you plenty of time to practice.

I HIGHLY recommend his CE course in dental photography. Dr. Ortiz is very down-to-earth and relaxed. He wants you to be successful and will spend one-to-one time with you to make sure you understand the fundamentals and hope to improve your photography. If you haven’t already been convinced, signed up for his course, or taken it yet, then what are you waiting for? Don’t let FOMO happen! Sign up today and learn how to take amazing photos like Dr. Ortiz! Just look at the photos that I attached and took at his course! I wouldn’t have even dreamed of taking similar photos before his course!

If you are looking for a CE course the will change the trajectory of your career, a new tool to reconnect with your passion for dentistry, a better communication tool to allow patients to see teeth differently, or an opportunity to give your work the fair chance to be appreciated, this is the course for you.

I was lucky enough to sign up for one of Dr Miguel Ortiz’s photography courses in Florida (I took it twice). I would like to take some time to share why it was the best investment I could have ever made.

I remember saying that the initial cost was way too low in the beginning and the guy was giving away knowledge for little or nothing. I had no idea of how big this course would impact the industry. The course is a perfectly balanced blend of hands-on and didactic lecture. The course is so powerful because it gives you a fundamental understanding of the key elements of general photography and how they can be applied to EVERY application of dentistry, even ones not mentioned in the course. When you leave you will have a good understanding of how to approach each photo depending on the desired outcome and purpose. He gives you tools that you can leave to practice and implement immediately. This is much more than telling you which controls to change for Intra and extra oral photography. If that is what you are looking for, just google it. The best analogy I could give is that you are being given the pythagorean theorem (you know the c-squared= a squared + b squared) and you can now apply that to an infinite number of applications. You will absolutely leave the course with the ability to take photos like a pro, and post your best work on Instagram, and have the ability to tap into your inner creativity with photography to express yourself and your work uniquely.

The return on investment is unbelievable. In my opinion, this course is the best tool to effectively translate the tens of thousands of dollars we spend each year on continuous education, treatment planning, diagnoses, and restorative/surgically driven course to give our patients access to the best treatment available to them. This is how they will SEE VALUE. They SEE THE details and the work that goes into making the restorations next-level. Patients SEE the value in seeing teeth like a dentist sees teeth. Taking beautiful and crisp photos of the teeth allows patients to take the driver seat and participate in co-diagnoses and co-discovery. The photography course won’t teach you how to be a good dentist. However, it will motivate you to be one really quick! Trust me. It is humbling to look at a prep through a 2.5-3.0 loupes with light, or an Itero scanner. It is even more humbling to look at the preparations on a photo that allows you to analyze and scrutinize your work in new ways. With each series of photos, I promise you the work will improve. And that is if you are Bill ****, Micheal ***, or Dr P***. It doesn’t matter, photography will make you a better dentist.

The other obvious return on investment comes from using the tools learned directly in this course from one on one time with Miguel and with the small groups, communicating with the lab. After I took this course I found a great lab that took time to see my passion for dentistry and help me grow as a practitioner.

I really feel sorry for anyone who has not had the opportunity to attend to one of the courses to have a huge impact on their lives, careers, patients, and financial well-being.

Each course is essentially what you make it.
Stepping up to give the patients the dental experience that they desire does require some initial investment. You have to know how to treatment plan, diagnoses, and do the work; you have to have one of the right cameras (there are many, in many price ranges that Miguel teaches you will work); you have to have an APPROPRIATE LENS, And you have to know how to use the light. For people who have the desire to Do. And to Learn. You will Do. And you will learn, after taking this course. You get the tools for very little money. Just like graduating dentistry gives you a golden ticket to lifetime learning, this course gives you the tools to leave and practice immediately. And with practice you will become that which you desire.

One last thing. After you take the course and understand light, you can save a ton of chair time by understanding how to take photos fast and accurately, and teach your staff to take them just as easily as you do. Before taking the course, I was taking 60 pictures on each patient and annoying them, hoping to get the right one. Now, my office is equipped with an entire photo studio with equipment recommended to me by Miguel. And my entire office experience and culture revolves around photography and “seeing teeth differently” as a key component in the diagnosis journey for each patient. They love it and benefit from it. And the communication has improved with my labs And with my specialist.

I took this course in November 2018. I was captivated the whole time. It was obvious that Dr. Ortiz cared about every detail of the user experience – from something as simple as signing up for the course to the hands-on portion. As an educator, I appreciated his dedication to small group and active learning as well as one-on-one guidance on technique. It was clear that he wanted participants to get as much practical knowledge and skills from the the experience, which I appreciated. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and highly recommend it.

And i was not disappointed at all , on the contrary, I had a different prespective on almost everything , new tips , he highlighted points that i didn’t pay attention to in the past . Brief ! I attended Dr. Miguel’s course in Dubai in October 2019. It was greatly arranged, filled with tricks that enhanced my daily practice and my picture-taking skills for all my patients and all procedures.
The course was organized really well and although we were a huge number we all had equal chances to practice in the workshop and Dr. Miguel was always there providing all of us one-to-one training during the workshop.

The most comprehensive photography course. Miguel takes your hand and should you what you need to know and how to do macro and portrait photography that you can implement at you dental office right away. What we need today is someone approachable that we can ask questions and get personalized answer with information easy to process, that is Miguel and his course.

Miguel’s photography course is one of a kind. Beautiful illustrations are used to explain basic concepts in photography, giving new information to beginners and advanced dental photographers. Participants get to try their hand at portrait photography and are able to get “sexy” pictures in a matter of minutes that don’t look as harsh as the clinical pictures we normally take. While I have yet to try the lighting system suggested by Miguel for intra oral pictures, the logic and rationale behind it is sound. I recommend this course for beginners and advanced users to fine tune their dental photography skills. The book “Lit” is a great companion to the course we well.

Feedback for future courses: consider reducing the number of participants (or introduce more teachers to assist), and go in depth into how to position mirrors and retractors for intra oral pictures, and perhaps have a hand on for this as well. Maybe this will be a bit technically difficult to do in one day, so perhaps day 2 could be an optional intra oral hands on component.

I recently took Dr. Ortiz’s course on Dental Photography (Austin) and am inspired to up my photo game. In 8 hours or so, I was taught some basic principles of photography and how I could apply it to my startup practice. I really appreciated the hands on portion, and liked playing around with different effects. As with all things, it will take some practice and time- but it’s great to get the information in such a practical way. Dr. Ortiz has a fun, approachable teaching style, and knows how to engage you to learn. His photo course is a great way to start one’s photo journey or to pick up some pearls along the way. This course was a fun, interactive way to appreciate the camera and how we can apply it to our practice. I had a blast and cantwait to take another course! Thanks again Doc!

Best dental photography course out there!
This course is not only well organized and informative but also the hands on portion gives you the chance to put what you learn into practice right there and then. You get to use all the fancy bouncers and flashes to take some cool and artistic shots to start your dental photography portfolio.
In the first half of the course you get a really clear and concise overview of basic photography principles and how to adjust the different settings on your camera to get the best image you can get. Then you get to try it out on your camera and take photos of the models, which really solidifies what you just learned.
Dr. Miguel Ortiz presents the material in a clear and organized way that is easily digestible. The course is so fun and engaging the whole time. There is no dull moment and I found that I was able to stay focused on the presenter and never drifted off.
Miguel is so passionate about photography, dentistry and teaching. He is such an expert in the field and has done all the hard work to make the learning as easy as possible for us. I love that about all of his courses!

Highly recommend this course to everyone! Especially to dental students and prosthodontics residents! The sooner you start learning these skills, the better you are able to incorporate them in your practice.

When I first noticed Miguel’s photographs on Instagram I was in awe. I learned that he offered the hands on photography course and I signed myself and husband up so that we could up our photography skills. We always thought that we took decent photographs but we wanted to get better. We’ve taken several AACD photography courses but still didn’t feel comfortable with our DSLR cameras. So, we flew down to Orlando and attended the course and gained so much knowledge about how to take better clinical photographs and portraits. It wasn’t just about how to get those fancy pictures, but Miguel taught us how to use our camera, what settings to use and how changing the simplest of settings or angles could capture those “sexy” pictures you see all over Instagram. Miguel is extremely helpful and answered all of my countless questions – even outside of the course. Soon after our course, we reached out to Miguel and hired him for a private in-office workshop for our neighbor peers. His course is the most helpful one I have ever taken. We learned so much that we tore down our work office to turn it into a permanent photography studio. Now we can take those amazing pictures of our patients whenever we want and it’s all thanks to what we learned in the workshop.

Not only has this course given us the confidence to take those glamour shots, but it has also helped us with lab communication. Miguel teaches proper shade taking techniques – like how to position the shade tab, camera, and lighting. If you are even remotely interested in taking better pictures, sign up for this course! You will not regret it. Miguel is one of the best lecturers that I have had the pleasure of learning from and he is by far the most approachable.

I took this course in January in 2019. I already had a fairly strong photography background from doing work as a wedding photographer years ago, but needed a bit of guidance when it came to using strobes and lights. Overall Dr. Ortiz teaches a fantastic course and not only his knowledge, but as well his passion is apparent throughout. The hands on portion was especially useful and fun to be able to try and recreate the images that we have all seen online. There is an element of how to post pictures that are social media worthy to it, but the skills to take those photos translate into taking any photo really so even if you don’t do a lot of social media posting, the skills are still being taught. If I could ask for anything to improve upon would be to have him let the participants practice the standard intra-oral protocol using mirrors, contrasters, polarizers, etc. I say this now but then with the release of his book I believe all of that is touched upon. In addition to Dr. Ortiz, Justin from Midwest Dental Arts was there to show us how there lab works and what can be done and that was very cool. Overall, great course!

I took this course April 2019. I had already taken an in-depth photography course so going in I had knowledge of how to capture great images. I think for the money, Dr. Ortiz really gives a lot of information. I walked away with a few gems – sometimes you need to hear things a different way and I got that from him.
He has a very different style and technique from the other course I had taken which was interesting for me. Literally his method was a complete different take and so I really learned some new techniques. He loves what he is doing and he spent as much time as needed with everyone in the course.
Bring your camera – if you don’t already have one, ask him and he will give you pointers on where to start. You need to have something to shoot with in order to learn and take it back to your office.
    I highly recommend this class.

I took this course in May 2018 in Los Angeles. The amount of passion Dr. Ortiz has for dentistry goes beyond just dental photography and it is felt during this course. This is a very inspiring course and I highly recommend it for all dental practitioners.

It’s a great course for anyone looking to gain fundamental photography skills. Furthermore, it can benefit even intermediate dental photographers looking to advance their skills. The class doesn’t focus on cookie cutter settings to standardize your shooting abilities, instead it forces you to find the settings that work best for you to optimize your desired photographs. I really liked this challenge because it truly made me a better dental photographer.

Again, I’d recommend this course to anyone who is interested in advancing their dental photography skills.

I took this course in Chicago the same weekend as AACD in 2018 and was lucky enough to have Carlos de Carvalho as a guest instructor.

This course is fundamental in anyone wanting to get involved in dental photography on any level whether simple case documentation and lab communication to the artistic insta photos. This is not a cookie cutter class of using specific settings to get specific photos. While Miguel does give recommended settings as guidance, he teaches you how to interpret the photos you’re taking and make the proper adjustments.

I would recommend this course to anyone, beginner or advanced photographer wanting to up their game.

The course is organized fairly well. But there are lots of smoke and mirrors here. The setup is excellent: cool notebooks, a videographer , and photographer. They all make it seem like this is the event of the century. But the course lacks depth and content.
Students crave facts and this is more about the journey of the lecturer than how to take photos on Monday morning in your practice.
There is a significant hands on portion but with many students and only one lecturer it is difficult to gain any experience.
Very little details were provided about the course beforehand so maybe my expectations were too high. I also don’t think you receive any CE credits for this course!
