Dr. George Arvanitis

Often our cosmetic patients present with worn anterior teeth that at first glance appear to require a few porcelain veneers to restore their aesthetics. It’s only after they chip or break their veneers that we begin to realize that maybe the situation was more complex. It’s not enough to simply restore the lost incisal length if you haven’t understood and treated the reason for the lost tooth structures in the first place. Without proper treatment planning and attention to occlusion your beautiful smile makeover will fail the same way their natural teeth did. Do you have the skills to handle complex smile makeovers that may also include a full mouth occlusal reconstruction?

This course will teach you the skills you need to know to fully understand the TMJ, TMJ disorders, occlusion and how to manage complex, difficult cases with a proven step by step approach that will change your practice and allow you to help patients like never before. Like all of the courses at the Ti-Max Institute this course is hands-on with 5 participation labs. You will diagnose and treat real cases requiring equilibration and transitional bonding on articulated typodonts.

You will learn:

  • TMJ anatomy and the muscles of mastication
  • How the TMJ functions in sickness and in health
  • A deeper level of understanding about occlusion, the 5 occlusal diagnoses and how to diagnose and treat these common occlusal problems to avoid costly broken restorations. Hands-on Lab- Diagnosing and Treating the 5 Diagnoses
  • How to perform an occlusal analysis to avoid being the cause of iatrogenic Temporomandibular Dysfunction
  • The simulation of occlusion with articulators. How to properly take a facebow, CR bite records and set up an articulator. Hands-on Lab
  • The Kois Deprogrammer and other techniques for finding a repeatable hinge axis
  • How to find the ideal length for the maxillary incisors that is patient specific- Hands-on Lab
  • How to set up anterior guidance that will allow effortless function
  • How to determine and reconstruct lost Vertical Dimension with transitional bonding
  • How to perform an equilibration. Hands-on Lab
  • Putting it all together- Step by Step: Techniques necessary to perform full mouth rehabilitation

Day 1

The Masticatory System in Sickness and in Health:

Understanding the anatomy and physiology of the TMJ and the muscles of mastication in health and in distress. TMJ disorders and their causes.

Occlusion: You will learn about current concepts in occlusion, including MIP, CR, and what occlusal scheme you should use when restorations are planned. You will learn answers to common occlusal problems and how to spot and avoid occlusal mistakes that complicate your day (like immediate dentures that don’t occlude like they did at the try-in). You will also learn how the masticatory system is programmed, what happens if we improperly interfere with this programming and how to correct it if we do. And much more.

How to properly examine the TMJ, occlusion and quickly diagnose problems. You will learn what questions to ask and how to explain to the patient what is required to help them. You will learn about the 5 occlusal diagnoses, how to treat them and how to identify your patient’s risk for treatment.

Hands-On Lab: Diagnosing and Treating the 5 Diagnoses

Day 2

The Simulation of Occlusion:

You will learn about articulators, what to look for when choosing a system and their use in complex dentistry. You will also learn how to take a proper facebow registration, the Kois Deprogrammer and other techniques for finding a repeatable hinge axis, which additional bite records to take, how to take them and how to adjust the settings on an articulator.

Hands-On Lab: Taking a Facebow and adjusting Articulator settings.

Equilibration: You will be taught when and why equilibration is necessary and a step by step approach to carrying out occlusal equilibrations.

Hands-On Lab: You will carry out an equilibration on typodonts.

Day 3

The Vertical Dimension of Occlusion:

You will learn how to analyze the smile and determine the ideal length of the maxillary incisors specifically for each patient. You will learn how to analyze and determine if vertical dimension has been lost, and parameters for reconstruction.

Hands-On Lab: Determining an aesthetic incisor length using the Kois Dento-Facial analyzer. Participants will pair up and analyze each other’s smiles.

Restoring Lost Vertical Dimension of Occlusion with Transitional Bonding: You will learn a lucrative step by step approach that will save you time and save your patient money whilst still allowing you to properly restore their occlusion and carry out your smile makeover.

Hands-On Lab: Transitional Bonding Workshop
