Michigan is a top school and when I went through the curriculum and hear when faculty and current dentists talk about Michigan graduates, they talk highly of the education. The good thing about Michigan is that there are strengths in research, clinical, connection to the Michigan hospital and others. What I liked most about Michigan is that they pushed us hard and we get good clinical experience. Our clinical experience is based off what we want to do as providers and we have lot of autonomy. Our rotation is very strong too because we rotate for about 3 months in offsite low cost dental clinics across Michigan, where we get to practice and pick up our speed even more.
For fostering a diverse and inclusive education environment, there are different clubs and fraternities that cater to each person’s desires for professional and personal growth. It’s really up to you on what you want to choose. Most of this inclusiveness comes from what type of people make up your class profile, and that is completely random because some people may turn down the school and some people may choose the school.

You have complete autonomy in choosing whoever you want for research (there are two curriculum additions you can choose: 1. Selectives or 2. Pathways). Pathways is literally do whatever you want. You want to go into the far away rural area and do research by implementing a new clinical technique? You can do that, you just need to find a faculty sponsor. You want to go a clinical faculty’s dental practice and do extra dental procedures there? You can do that. I chose to do selectives, which is basically elective courses you choose from year to year. I applied to the oral surgery selective course and it gave me a huge increase in my confidence in surgical skills.

Thanks to that course, I did 3 molar extractions straight out of dental school. It depends on each class, generally a lot of people who come to Michigan like to specialize. It’s not the easiest school to specialize at though. University of Michigan is highly competitive and it’s very hard to get As with your smart classmates. My class was made up of 50/50 specialize and general practice. A lot of people choose to do oral surgery, orthodontics, and pediatrics. Of the 50% who want to do general practice, I’d say 25% or less are doing AEGD/GPR, maybe less than that. I actually highly advise to do an AEGD/GPR. It’s great learning experience if you choose a good one.

There’s a LOT of community outreach opportunities. Each organization has plenty of outreach and it varies so much. You can do clinical or non-clinical outreach. We’re always busy with outreach. On a global scale we are very well known for our GIOCH program: Kenya, Jamaica, Brazil, China, Ethiopia, Greece, Guatemala, Israel, Mexico. It’s headed by Dr. Gonzalez,

Him and his wife Dr. Fontana are famous in the dental world for cariology. I personally went to Jamaica and did a lot of extractions, also built my confidence up more (you’re doing extractions without radiographs and on limited dental tools). If you can pull out a tooth without xrays, with someone’s head on your thigh in 90 degree heat and with tough Jamaican jaw bone, you can do extractions easy peasy. We have surprisingly actually a large diversity of patients that go to our school. From Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, all over.

People make the drive because University of Michigan is a big name. Patients love going to our school. Financially, University of Michigan is actually one of the few clinics (also Detroit mercy) who take Medicaid for Oral Surgery procedures. So Oral Surgery clinic gets pretty busy. The population will allow you to do all sorts of dentistry. For me, I got to do cosmetic cases, restore implants, alveoplasty, dentures, endo…etc.

We get a lot of clinical experience because you need certain amount of points you need to graduate (1150, where each filling is about 1-3 points, a denture is 30 (but over 7 visits)), so you can see how much work we really produce for me, I’ve gotten lucky with a some cosmetic cases that some people didn’t’t get to do. It’s up to you to treatment plan your patient. Our endo is weak because we only need 2 root canals to graduate and that’s the biggest weakness of our program. I chose this school because it had a great reputation, good clinical skills, connections with other top grad schools and undergrad, so you get to meet more than just dental people and that it’s cheaper than all but 1 dental school in California.

When i first visited the school during interview i loooved the vibe and it was so cool how the michigan M was on everything, trash cans… doors, on everything! so much pride in this school and it’s fun to be a part of and be part of history but when I was halfway through D4 year and clinical experience is great, I already felt ready in 3rd year.
