Currently, I have taken the 165 and 173 courses from the Kois center and I am signed up for the biomechanics course in 2020. I really think larger continuum courses are where you get the most knowledge and ‘bang for your buck’. Despite this continuum having a fairly high cost, I really do feel that you get what you pay for in terms of the quality. There is a lot of information presented really well through the courses and key points are broken down into separate pages that you can always access separately to review.

Any procedures he goes over and teaches he also provides separate pages for which is very helpful when you get back to the clinic and want to start implementing it into practice. A lot of the skills that I learned from both courses are used now in my everyday practice. While I still need to find ways to implement more of it, I think these courses have helped set up a solid foundation for my continued dental education.

I am strongly of the belief that if you want to take your Dentistry to the highest levels you possibly can you need to take a continuum, not individual courses, because it’s all about stretching your mind. And if that’s the case I would recommend the Kois Center first and foremost. I do not have as much experience with some of the competitor training centers, although I do have a lot of colleagues that have gone through their programs, but I do know one thing; John is approachable, he is evidence-based and he is one of the best educators in dentistry. It’s not just my word but the word of many others as well. His continuum will take you through a journey of growth that is compared to a graduate program but you can do it at your pace. I recommend not doing all the modules within a short period of time because it is difficult to implement the philosophy and protocols that he shares with you if you do not give it a little bit of time to absorb in your mind and in your practice. I did it over five and a half years which gave me the opportunity to learn concepts, principles, protocols and implement them. Then you can see what works, get comfortable with it and then build on it. The few friends that I took the program with, especially one of my best friends, did it that way as well to control how we grow. I think if you start taking individual modules just to be selective you’re not going to get the big picture. It’s like going to grad school and missing out 3 months of the program because you decided you know the material already and don’t need to go to the lecture and clinics. That’s how detailed and in depth the modules are.

If you are ready for the journey I would take either this treatment planning one or the joint treatment planning and functional occlusion course. The reason being is it starts with the foundation of all of his principles for diagnosis, risk assessment and comprehensive care. If you are ready for that journey to take your dentistry from one level to a completely new level you will know within the first morning when you get there. I would say that that 99% of the people that I have recommend to go have continued their journey. In the Seattle Study Club I run we have Spear, Pankey and Kois people but the majority of them are on the journey of Kois or Spear. John is definitely one of the best educators around period. But I wouldn’t do it just for the sake of taking one course, “oh I want to learn implants from John”, you’re just not going to get the proper picture in my opinion. Kois is unique and I would not recommend doing individual courses at all. I feel very strongly about that. For Spear it is another story because you have the seminars and if you want to figure out if the the journey is right for you, you take all the seminars. Then you can decide what resonates with you and if you want to take your dentistry to the next level you take the workshop. But you have got to put the money down for the workshop. Both Kois and Spear are giving you the opportunity to do grad school at your own pace. Kois does so through their entire curriculum and Spear through their workshops where you’re working in small groups.

The Kois center provides a curriculum that covers all aspects of general and restorative dentistry, including but not limited to treatment planning, occlusion, periodontics, removable, restoring implants, and biomechanics (operative and restorative dentistry).  It is almost exclusively taught by John Kois D.M.D, M.S.D.  This is what sets the course apart from all others.  John Kois is a Periodontist and a Prosthodontist. He is an incredible educator who is both caring and approachable.  As a speaker he is thoughtful and concise.  His courses are constantly updated based on credible scientific evidence including his own team’s research.

The entire curriculum is best described as graduate school for general dentistry.  In a profession where we are inundated by new materials and techniques promoted by manufacturers and supply companies, the Kois center  provides sound practices and material selection based only in proven science.

The course material is extensive.  Each day consists of 11 hours of high quality lecture with one hour for lunch.  You will initially learn treatment planning and occlusion.  You will learn to use the Kois Center’s medical and dental questionnaire forms to help determine your patients dental health and needs.  Dr. Kois has a risk based approach to dentistry.  You will learn to determine periodontal risk, caries risk, functional/occlusal risk, and esthetic risk.  You’ll be well educated on how to treat severe periodontal disease, high caries risk patients, and patients with occlusal disorders.  If you are interested in cosmetic dentistry, the Kois courses will teach esthetic principals and you will learn how to make restorations last based on functional occlusion and bonding techniques.  This is not a pure cosmetic dentistry course.  While esthetic principals are taught, there are other hands on cosmetic dentistry courses that are more focused on esthetics. The Kois courses would be an excellent supplement to other cosmetic course.

The center itself is top notch.  The facility is state of the art and comfortable.  The center is located on the picturesque Lake Union in Seattle.   The class size is small, up to 37 students per class.  Dr. Kois provides an impressive in house snacks and beverage center to keep students fresh during lecture.  He has his own restaurant in the building with high quality gourmet meals for lunch.  A dinner is provided for one of the course nights on his yacht as you cruise around Lake Union. Yes, a yacht, a huge and amazing yacht.

I highly recommend this curriculum to any dentist who wants to do more for their patients.  I have been practicing for 12 years as a general and cosmetic dentist in San Francisco.  I use the Kois teachings every day to educate my patients on how best to keep their teeth for as long as possible.  I use his operative and restorative techniques every day and I feel very confident in my work.  I complete many complex restorative and cosmetic cases including minimal prep veneers and full mouth restorations using the philosophies taught in the Kois Center.
