Our purpose is to provide the opportunity and environment for graduate dentists to enhance and perfect the skills and knowledge gained in dental school. This residency will emphasize general dentistry and provide education and patient care experiences involving the management of patients with a wide range of medical conditions in both the ambulatory and inpatient setting.

This hospital-based training program will broaden the residents’ knowledge of oral and systemic diseases. It will offer an opportunity to work with other health professionals in the hospital setting and broaden clinical exposure to medically-compromised patients. The residency will enable the graduate of this program to serve their community by providing them with the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of special patients. Upon completion of the residency, the dentist will be qualified to obtain hospital privileges.

Most any GPR program experience will depend on your expectations, the program faculty and staff, the setting, the patient and cases, you motivation to get the experiences you desire, etc. etc. etc. So program reviews can be somewhat subjective – but I really enjoyed my GPR experience at the Minneapolis VA. At the time, Drs. John Ofstehage and Dr. Lo were running the program. Some of the personnel has changed, so look into it for yourself. But this residency provided me with a ton of opportunities in restorative, endo, perio, surgery, pathology, placing and restoring implants, sleep dentistry! As well as your typical hospital rotations including ER, Anesthesia, Derm, ENT. Great for a general dentist looking for experience in a variety of treatments, as well as some things that may not be immediately relevant to a typical private practice setting, but it’s those very experiences that make you a more well rounded provider and you will appreciate in times of need. Don’t get me wrong, it was a tough and busy year, but I don’t regret it one bit!
