Year One Curriculum

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Course

All incoming residents take Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). This course, taught by OSUMC faculty, prepares residents for further training in risk assessment and their rotations in anesthesia, medicine and the emergency room, and is a requirement for IV Conscious Sedation certification.

Physical Diagnosis Course

As a resident, you are expected to do histories and physical examinations on patients that you admit for care; this overview course in physical assessment helps you improve your understanding of the language of medicine, interpretation of physical findings and determination of risk assessment for each patient. Seminars cover the didactic portion of the course during orientation in June, and practical training in history taking and physical examinations begins during the medicine rotation and continues throughout the year. This training is reinforced by off-service rotations on emergency medicine and anesthesia.

Literature Reviews

Residents are involved in literature review sessions seven to eight times throughout the year. Selected articles are presented verbally and in writing to the dental faculty by the residents in formal sessions each month, with an emphasis on evaluating the literature from a qualitative standpoint.

Weekly Case Conferences, Rounds, Treatment Planning Conferences

Residents attend the weekly grand rounds lecture series prepared for the College of Dentistry, which addresses both medical and dental topics to give a balanced overview of clinical subjects. These conferences are case presentation conferences to review the previous and present week cases treated in the hospital and clinic and under anesthesia. The conferences are a component of the hospital and program’s quality assurance activities.

Advanced General Dentistry Seminars

Beginning during orientation and continuing throughout the year, generalists and specialists in medicine and dentistry teach an extensive seminar series on a broad variety of topics and specialty areas in dentistry and many in medicine.

Continuing Education

Residents are permitted time to enroll in College of Dentistry continuing dental education courses at reduced expense. Nationally-recognized experts present half- or full-day postdoctoral courses on topics relevant to dentists in the area. Residents can also attend lectures or courses sponsored by our local dental society and College Alumni office.

Year Two Curriculum

Residents may desire an additional year of training (a chief residency) before they enter practice or an academic year. Up to two chief residents are selected from an applicant pool that includes residents from the first year of our program. Two months (20%) of their time are spent in elective courses.

As a second-year general practice resident, you will design your own program of special interest from the following:

  • additional oral surgery
  • anesthesia
  • implants
  • orthodontics
  • cancer surgery
  • periodontics
  • maxillofacial prosthodontics
  • radiation oncology
  • pre-doctoral teaching
