Endodontics Unsponsored
Dr. Mark Olesen

This 2-day course consists of a combination of lecture and laboratory work (about 50% lecture and 50% hands-on working with extracted teeth). Limited to 10 dentists. 16 hours of CE credit. The emphasis of the course is on shaping canals with rotary files. The course material is relevant to all dentists with an interest in endodontics and of all levels of experience.

 Objectives:

  • To better understand why root canal treatment is not always successful.
  • To gain more knowledge and skills in order to increase success of root canal treatment.
  • To learn more about resolving difficult-to-anesthetize teeth.
  • To learn more about finding canals.
  • To learn more about how to negotiate to the terminus of the majority of ‘calcified’ canals.
  • To learn more about electronic apex locators.
  • To better understand the concepts of using rotary and reciprocating nickel titanium files to enlarge even the most severely curved canals.
  • To learn more about the various nickel titanium file systems presently available (rotary and reciprocating), the differences between them and their advantages and disadvantages.
  • To learn more about conserving dentin when shaping canals so that root fractures are hopefully less likely to develop in the future.
  • If there is a file system that you are comfortable with, to learn how to make it more effective and reduce the risk of file separation.
  • To learn more about irrigants used to clean root canal systems and how to use them safely.
  • To learn more about obturation of root canal systems. Simplification of both vertical and lateral condensation techniques is covered.
  • To learn more about antibiotic and pain medications in endodontics.

* WARNING: This course will not try to sell you on a particular brand of file. It will also not tell you how easy endodontic treatment is and that all canals can be shaped well and safely with the same 1-3 files.

Adding to the stuff from previous reviewers, Dr. Olesen has background as a restorative dentist which really helps him be empathetic to his colleagues “in the trenches”. And he does touch on composite overlays to safeguard teeth after treatment. He reviewed some conservative strategies to deal with teeth that are not ready for endodontic treatment. He leans towards Drs. Khademi and Clark’s research on making things more conservative.

Also we must review food at all the CE – 5 stars. He also took us to lunch at the pub. Feel free to grab a beer. He creates a safe and collegial environment so you can go ahead and ask him any nagging question you might have. Rest assured we have all been there and he reminds you about that 😉

I took this course in July of 2019. I’ve been in private practice for six years and since school have never really found root canals to be my favourite procedure. Given that they are unavoidable I decided it’d be good to invest in a quality CE course that would be able to help me gain some knowledge and confidence to treat our standard every day endo cases, better – this didn’t necessarily mean quicker though, but rather more methodically and more efficiently, while also giving some confidence to tackle more difficult cases.

This course blew me away. The small class size of 10 people is great for a one on one learning experience with Mark. He takes time to get to know where everyone is from and what type of practice you’re in and what endo system you are using so he can make recommendations on what he thinks you may like or dislike but is open to having you try as many systems as you wish. He has many pearls to help you with every stage of a root canal, tips, tricks, hacks with different instruments and he is genuinely there to make your life easier during Endodontic procedures. His handbook for the course then includes all of the dental suppliers he uses for instruments and you can tell he is literally “unsponsored” as he gets equipment from a vast array of suppliers.

Being six years out I was the most senior dentist there during my course; I think taking this course anytime during your career will be worthwhile and the biggest accolade I gave to Mark is that I left feeling excited to go back and do root canals and that’s held true since I returned from his course. It might be the best course I have taken to date given its application to day-to-day bread and butter dentistry and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to better there knowledge and skill in endo. Very highly recommended!

One of my favorite endo courses as the course is literally “unsponsored”.

Hard to find “unsponsored” courses in endo as most available courses are either Tulsa, Brassler, Sybron etc basically selling their file systems, or you have Buchanan’s course which is still good from what I hear but about $1000 more than this. (At this time $2500 CAD is about $1800 USD)

You had to bring some nice molars when I went, but there were plenty of molars that the course provided (not as nice – lots of 2nd/3rd molars) and lots of molars some attendees brought.

Everyone gets their own scope to work with, which was really cool.

Dr. Olesen cut through a lot of nonsense that big companies want to make you believe. He is big on being minimally invasive and shaping canals while preserving coronal tooth structure. When I took the course a few years ago, he was big on the Edge files.

After taking the course I became a big fan of the Edge files, and using it as he does I became more efficient as well. Lots of pearls as well to avoid breaking files. Highly recommended!

Pricey but well worth it. Mark is very candid and willing to answer any of your questions. As the title implies Mark is not sponsored and he repeatedly will bring this up during the weekend. It can get a little much but you know that he’s not selling you something. The best example of this is that he is paying full cost for nearly all major file systems out there and he has them all available for you to compare and contrast (not just file systems either, but any endo tool you can think of…)
Mornings are didactic and afternoons are hands on working on extracted teeth with Mark adding tips and tricks as questions arise. Small group of 10 makes it very interactive and fun.
The food was also good! =)
