Spear is a fantastic resource for a comprehensive treatment style practice. Their videos have given me the knowledge to treatment plan complex multidisciplinary cases with confidence, and have saved me years of headaches trying to figure out many of these things on my own. It offers a lot of useful information that you can incorporate into your daily practice. Whether it is a step by step protocol for an initial comprehensive exam, effective scheduling, verbiage for front desk to let your patients know the different levels of service you can offer, to multi disciplinary treatment planning, treating wear patients, aesthetic cases, identifying and treatment options for TMD, implant planning and treatment etc, etc, etc. There is s ton of content for you and the team (getting everyone in the office to be on the same page as it were), and there is so much more.

Entering my 2nd year as a Spears Online member! The online campus is incredible for it’s video content, especially on concepts about occlusion and TMJ. Easy CE especially during times when you don’t want to travel. Highly recommended for all new dentists!

Huge knowledge data base that is always updated. They have refresher information if you’ve taken the seminars with real valuable tips. I find myself on this site daily watching new content. Hard to imagine ever getting through all the content however

Coming out of school this is one of the greatest purchases you can make. I learned so much from this site and it was well worth the investment. I still tune in to videos, but less frequently than I used to. The site seems to becoming more “commercial” since Frank Spear is no longer involved and I find the majority of new videos aren’t so helpful. This is the only reason I am giving it 4 stars.

Anyone coming out of school sign up for this right now and watch all you can. However, after a few years of subscription and seeing the direction the online videos are heading I think this may be my last year sadly.

Spear online was my favorite resource as a new graduate in 2017. I think this platform is one of the best places to begin as a new dentist and a great resource for more experienced dentists. When I was first out of school, I didn’t know where to turn to look for good CE courses and I didn’t know what I didn’t know. My budget was also really limited and the Spear Online platform was a much more cost effective place to learn from. Spear Online acted as a gateway towards exploring how to improve my everyday dentistry and provided tidbits on other areas of dentistry that are emerging that could be explored further through other CE courses (implants, airway management, etc.).

I have done over 150 CE on Spear Online and you get roughly 1 CE per 1 hour of lecture video watched, though some shorter videos do not give CE. The quality of the lectures varies depending on the speaker presenting but I think almost every lecture has given me at least some pearl of information that I can bring into my practice.

So I’m going to disagree with the previous reviewer… this online video library is fantastic resource! Yes, there are videos in the 10 minute range but I’d say most are much longer. The CE received is appropriate; if you watch 1 hour of video, you get 1 CE hour. Most videos are part of a series; so, although one video may only be 20 minutes and not worth a CE hour, it’s part of an overall series that may be worth 1-2 CE hours. There are ‘pathways’ that highlight various topics and include multiple learning modules. For example, occlusion, implants, endodontics…
I love the platform and the support from Spear is next level. You have a designated representative to help teach you how to navigate the site and direct your learning.
There’s also access to team videos for the staff. There are patient education videos. The team and Spear are updating videos and adding content all the time. Your online membership also gives you access to Spear Chat (an online forum for dentists with all sorts of new topics posted everyday) and Spear Digest (new articles posted by Spear faculty every couple of days).

This is definitely useful if you want a quick recap on say the mandibular nerve block (and listen to Dr. Malamed himself lecturing) or go over veneer preps (Dr. Frank Spear) , etc. Most videos are not more than -10 minutes long which means you can listen to them in between patients, early morning, or at home. I usually have it running on my iPad and catch a video or 2 in between patients.

The problem I find is the lack of CE through this. For ex: I finished the entire mandibular nerve block course and got 0.75 CE for it. Which is fine if you don’t care about CE, but for me I felt like it was misleading, because I was told you can get about 300 hours of CE. If I do get 300 hours it means I’m going to listen to about 700 lectures. Which again, like I said, won’t matter if you don’t care about the CE. 🙂

The other issue I find is that there is no clear path or steps on how to tackle the videos. It’s a big data base and sometimes I feel lost. You can go through it based on what you want to listen to, but if you’re a new dentist and need a guided curriculum, its a lot of time being wasted just combing through the information. Spear does provide you with a guided study advisor who can help you, but apart form the one time I spoke to him, its been difficult for me to find time to coordinate with him.

The other benefits include videos to train your staff at staff meetings, and patient education videos to use in the OP. I have found the patient education videos really cool, most of my techie patients find it very useful and are immediately impressed. For example ‘what is a crown? what is a root canal?’

So all in all, its a decent investment and I would continue it next year when my initial ‘new dentist’ membership runs out (make sure to ask if you qualify for a discount based on when you graduated, also there are several podcasts that offer a discount or a 30 day free guest pass).Mainly because for the cost, they are offering pretty high quality videos.
