Personally I like that spear has seminars and workshops. Tying this in with the spear study club model makes it very attractive financially for new grads. The seminars will open your eyes but the workshops is where you will learn the in depth knowledge to take your game to a new level. You get the perspective of many great instructors which is also a big positive IMO.

PLUS the online component is also there which contains a lot of information from their courses.

Having taken a few courses at both Spear Education and the Kois Center. I can definitely say that there has been a lot more hands on exercises in the Spear workshops and the content is filtered very well so that you have key information you can implement into your practice right away. Kois by comparison has a lot more lecture information and is very detailed but Dr. Kois does a great job in leaving you well informed about what information you should always remember.

I believe you can’t go wrong doing either of these continuums but I think the important part is to pick one and stick to it. With Spear, I haven’t taken any of the seminars but from what I have been told, the workshops go a lot more in depth compared to the seminars. If you are wanting some quick information, then the seminars may be the right place for you, but if you are wanting to fully embrace an improved way of practicing, then the workshops are the place to be.

So here’s the thing with Spear, I absolutely love it but I truly believe that if you want to take your dentistry to the next level in the way the Kois Center does, you need to do the workshops. The only way to do the workshops is to go through the seminars. The seminars give you a flavour of what comprehensive dentistry is all about but I don’t believe that you will take your dentistry to the next level until you take Restorative Design and Facially Generated Treatment Planning workshops and learn from the masters. They have some of the best young educators in dentistry, they are very approachable and they teach you how to be a comprehensive dentist. You will learn how to diagnose and treatment plan comprehensive care so that you will be a more complete dentist rather than just a tooth fixer. But you can’t get to that point if you don’t take the workshops at Spear, period. That’s my opinion and I stand by it. So Spear is a little less expensive initially with the seminars but eventually you have to take the workshops so you can’t get away from spending the money. Or you go to Kois and you pay more upfront but you start the journey right way. In the end both are world class educators.

If you’re going to start with the workshops I would definitely start with the Facially Generated Treatment Planning and then Restorative Design. Have I taken them? No but I know the people instructing. They are very personal and I’ve learned from all of them that are teaching those two courses. They’re going to teach you how to diagnose, how to look at the whole person and not the just individual teeth. And they’re going to teach you how to prep teeth properly to the materials that are available to us today. Those are two are musts to start with, but again you’re going to have to spend the money not just $1500 dollars for a seminar.

In general this continuum is well balanced in lecture and hands on curriculum. Starting in the lectures and moving on into the workshops is the way to go in order to implement into everyday practice. Without the workshops, it is almost impossible to implement. The facility is very nice and staying at the Fairmont is a treat. Register early, because courses sell out quickly.
