Dr. Steven Schiffenhaus

This course is a comprehensive hand-ons workshop to enable doctors to execute Biomimetic & Advanced Adhesive Overlay & Onlay designs immediately. The course will review the biomimetic and biomechanics rationale behind non-retentive partial coverage ceramic designs. Students will be given diagnosis and real world treatment planning education for partial coverage ceramic restorations. Preparation fundamentals with electric handpieces including bur selection and prep protocol will hands on portion of Day 1. Dr. Schiffenhaus will demo several overlay designs and prep principles and mentor students as the perform similar designs. At the end of the first day, Dr. Graeme Milicich will give a remote lecture on The Compression Dome Concept & 6 Fracture Modes of Teeth. After Day 1, students are invited to experience some handgun and rifle shooting at the local gun club with Dr. Schiffenhaus. Day 2 will start with fundamentals of Onlay design followed by prep protocols and demos. Students will learn and perform various non-retentive & adhesive onlay designs. The second half of day 2 will focus on immediate dentin sealing. Immediate dentin sealing is the cornerstone to the non-retentive partial coverage approach. Fundamentals and protocol for immediate dentin sealing will be reviewed. Immediate dentin sealing will be demo’d by Dr. Schiffenhaus & students will perform IDS on their preparations.

The best kind of in-person CE is a class that helps the student learn a new skill and be able to reproduce the skill on Monday. With the Baard in-person prep course, you will be confident to prep an overlay/onlay preparation the following Monday, along with temporization and cementation. Dr. Schiffenhaus is an engaging lecturer, but he doesn’t talk all day. He creates a good balance between lectures, demos, and hands-on practice. His passion for the subject is evident and you can’t help but become passionate for adhesive dentistry with him. I highly recommend the class to anyone who wants to start their journey in adhesive dentistry.

I came across Dr. Schiffenhaus’ instagram page roughly a year ago, and prior to that had been following other dental educational instagram pages since before I graduated in 2018. Maybe it was the “schiffenhaus smooth” preps of his, or the BRD after dark instagram live sessions where I’d tune in and get to see how he worked a number of difficult cases. Whatever the case may be, I was excited to sign up for his online courses and to learn more about BAARD. When the in-person course opened up, I knew it would be a great way to cement (bond?) the information I had learned in the virtual course into my ever-expanding repertoire of biomimetic knowledge. It was like being back in dental school again, but getting to cherry pick the best parts of the best classes to aid you in your clinical dentistry. We had a ton of hands on practice, and I feel way more confident in my overlay preps. I’ve had two overlay deliveries since the course, and recognized just how differently (and better) I would have prepared them if they’d been coming in for the first time this week. It was a great course, and I plan on taking more from Steve in the future.

The BAARD hands on course was everything I expected and more. Steve has a great presence as a speaker and kept some of the important literature and science from bogging down the days. He presented his prep protocols in a way that creates a recipe for success and repeatable results. I found that the other doctors were all extremely knowledgeable in the arena of Biomimetics and yet they were also learning just as much as a novice. The accommodations were comfortable and the catering was very good. Overall I found the course to be professional and well organized, but Steve is such a personable guy it didn’t feel stuffy or over the top. I would highly recommend this course for doctors who want to improve their skills or those just beginning to get into the world of adhesive dentistry.

This course takes everything from the online BAARD experience (and more) and enables clinicians to put the concepts and protocols into practice with an excellent hands-on experience. The two-day experience offers the perfect balance of science-driven lecture and hands-on, using real case studies, applicable scientific literature, and Bien Air electric hand pieces with layered composite teeth to give a realistic element to countless tabletop exercises. Dr. Schiffenhaus keeps it light and entertaining, while delivering the high quality course content he’s known for with the help of the very friendly and personable Dr. Patrick Calalang and Steve’s clinical assistant, Tara. At the end of the day, Dr. Schiffenhaus planned an evening at the gun range, allowing all course attendees an fun opportunity for fellowship and networking. We all had a blast, and everyone enjoyed the additional unique “hands-on” experience. Thanks to the BAARD team and to all the attendees for making the course extremely educational and fun. The BAARD Institute was the first exposure to biomimetic adhesive dentistry that I received. One of the best investments that I made.

Dr. Steven Schiffenhaus and his team made the experience wonderful and very easy to follow. He is a great lecturer and very down to earth person that will go to lengths to help you understand his philosophies of adhesive dentistry. If you’re looking to learn more about biomimetic dentistry, this is the course I recommend for anyone.
